Jason Smith spent his early years living and working in the Washington DC area and renting apartments that were owner-managed. Jason observed the high level of motivation that the owners had to maintain both their property and the tenant relationship. He enjoyed direct communication regarding issues with maintenance or payment and also enjoyed that the owner would often offset rent in exchange for his participation in the maintenance and improvement of the property.
In 2008, Jason and his wife moved to Colorado Springs where they rented an apartment in north Colorado Springs managed by a local property management company. In stark contrast to the relationships he enjoyed with his landlords in DC, Jason observed minimal motivation from the management company to maintain the property, slow response times to maintenance issues and a lack of responsive communication. Often left to take maintenance issues into his own hands with no financial offsets, Jason found himself, along with other tenants frustrated and eager to move.
In 2009, Jason jumped at the opportunity to purchase a fixer-upper in the Patty Jewett Community of Colorado Springs. Able to put experience to good use, Jason and his wife invested in responsible upgrades to fully rehab the property including growing a lush yard from seed. In 2017, Jason and his wife sold their home at a record setting price for the neighborhood, which enabled them to purchase a home in the Mountain Shadows community. It was evidence of what maintenance and ongoing but wise investment can accomplish. In the Mountain Shadows community, Jason gained first-hand experience with single-family and multi-tenant rental properties and developed a vision for property management that would take into consideration the needs of all stakeholders - owners, tenants, neighbors, guests.
The Smiths launched a retail pet supply business in 2011, expanding to four locations, three of them leased. Through this experience, the Smiths got a taste of commercial property management and modern leasing practices - the good, the bad, and the downright exploitive. When the Smiths opened their fourth location and purchased their first commercial property in 2016, they used the same strategy of steady, responsible investment to upgrade the property.
In 2022, the Smiths purchased the commercial property housing their flagship retail location and in 2023, Jason launched JMMP to manage his own commercial properties and the residential and commercial properties of clients.
